It is only day 2 and it is clear that, with a rent of $180 (after rent assistance), it is almost impossible to eat properly each day and pay for water, gas, electricity, phone, internet, public transport/car costs, clothes, let alone things like hair-cuts and anything else that may arise.
If I were doing this for any longer, I'd have to find cheaper housing.
The public housing waiting list is huge. Many people have suggested share-housing, though in inner-Melbourne that can be pretty expensive too. Others, with children or partners, have talked about the need to look for a cheap dwelling for their family. We need to tackle housing affordability in this country. I'll be spending today talking to people who are dealing with the consequences of the affordability crisis.
