Premier Baillieu is mad to set aside funds for the East West Tunnel in today's Budget, Mr Bandt said. Mr Bandt said the tollway plan will wreck inner-Melbourne, is economically unviable and will be a political and economic albatross around Ted Baillieu's neck.
The Victorian State Budget released today has allocated $15 million to planning for the East West tollway.
"The only way this tollway will be built is if the Federal government helps fund it and I will doing everything I can to stop that." Mr Bandt said.
"Ted Baillieu is mad to go down this road. He is going to create a political, environmental and economic albatross around his neck."
"This money should be spent on progressing plans for Doncaster rail, not wrecking inner- Melbourne neighbourhoods."
"This is more environmental vandalism from the Victorian Premier. We're meant to be tackling climate change, not creating more pollution."
"This 'drill first and ask questions later' approach is typical of a government that doesn't care about people or the environment." Mr Bandt said.
Mr Bandt will host a public meeting on the East West Tollway tomorrow night (6pm, Wed May 2) at the Dan O'Connell Hotel a Carlton pub threatened by the tollway.
