Burma
The world celebrated when Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was released from many years of house arrest in November 2010. While there have been modest reforms recently, the situation in Burma is still very tense. The Burmese people still do not have a legitimate constitution, a democratic society or the rule of law.
The conflict continues, as does forced labour and the conscription of child soldiers; more than one thousand political prisoners languish in jail and 15 million people nationwide are living in poverty. The Greens work in solidarity with Burmese advocates to strengthen the Australian government’s response to Burma's hideous human rights record. We’re proud to have achieved a universal arms embargo, support for a UN commission of inquiry into crimes against humanity, and changes to how our aid budget is spent.
