Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown, Senator for Queensland Larissa Waters, Senators for Western Australia Rachel Siewert and Scott Ludlam, and Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt spoke to the media about the Australian Greens National Conference in Fremantle, WA.

Topics included the allocation of preferences, the environmental threats posed by developments in the Kimberley, and the Nationals' call for a "discussion paper" on coal seam gas.

Labor becoming less compassionate: Bandt

Greens MP for Melbourne Adam Bandt has labelled the Prime Minister's comments about jobseekers as uncompassionate and a distraction from the real economic issues confronting this budget.

"At a huge cost to public revenue, the Government caved in on the mining tax and is planning to give billions more in tax cuts to big business," he said.

Childcare: ABC Learning Centres

That the Senate
 
(a) Notes:
(i) the Government’s second prop-up of $34 million to keep ABC Learning operating until March 31, is due to expire in two weeks time; and
(ii) of the 241 failed centres due to sell or close, only 65 have been sold to date;

(b) Recognises that:
(i) This crisis represents an opportunity for childcare in Australia to transform from a market-driven industry to a vital community service and a government-supported first step in lifelong learning.

(c) Calls on the Government to immediately make available capital grants funds, and operational costs to assist not-for-profit childcare providers in taking over the remaining centres.
