CBA record half-year profit shows big banks can afford to pay more tax

Adam Bandt 10 Feb 2016

Greens Treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said that news the Commonwealth Bank has posted another record half-year profit of $4.8 billion proves the big banks can afford to pay more tax.

“Yet again one of the big 4 banks has put away a record half-year profit, proving they can afford to pay their fair share in tax,” Mr Bandt said.

“Instead of looking at attacking our long-standing universal healthcare system by privatising parts of Medicare, the government should again look at introducing a bank deposit levy, but limit it to the Big 4.”

Liberal flat-tax proposal throwback to Joh Bjelke-Petersen

Adam Bandt 5 Feb 2016

Greens Treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP said the flat-tax proposal for income tax floated by Liberals MP Dan Tehan today is a throwback to Joh Bjelke-Petersen that would increase inequality in Australia.

“Today we hear that the Turnbull government is considering swinging a wrecking ball through our progressive tax system by instating a flat-tax,” Mr Bandt said.

“Liberal MPs are dredging up Neanderthal ideas of conservative thought that belong squarely in the past.”

Turnbull ‘mum’ on fate of refugee babies & children

In response to his first question since yesterday’s High Court decision concerning the fate of the 37 babies and 90 children living in Australia, directed to him in Question Time by Greens MP Adam Bandt, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull refused to commit to not sending these children currently living in Australia to Nauru.

“It is devastating that Malcolm Turnbull will not commit to letting these children, including 37 babies, stay in Australia,” Mr Bandt said.

“The Prime Minister seems on track to authorise child abuse by sending them to the hellhole of Nauru.”

Gutting CSIRO climate science is the enemy of innovation

News that the Turnbull Liberal Government is sacking more CSIRO scientists, gutting climate science in Australia, shows what a climate-denialist government this is.

Australian Greens Deputy Leader and climate change spokesperson, Senator Larissa Waters said: "Turnbull's mass sacking of climate scientists is the enemy of innovation."

"The Prime Minister's speech in Paris about tackling global warming with innovation was all empty rhetoric - he is keeping Abbott's climate policies and letting the Coalition climate dinosaurs rule."
