ACTU backs Bandt bill on work-life balance

Greens MP and workplace relations spokesperson Adam Bandt has welcomed support of the ACTU and workplace academics for his Work-Life Balance Bill in evidence to a House of Representatives inquiry today.

The Standing Committee on Education and Employment held a public inquiry into the Fair Work Amendment (Better Work/Life Balance) Bill 2012 today.

"I welcome the support of the ACTU for my bill today", Mr Bandt said today.

"The ACTU highlighted that the increased number of women in workplace and the changing responsibilities in families make work/life balance a big issue for Australian workers."

"It clear that workers with caring responsibilities in particular need greater rights."

"The balance of evidence to the committee today was that the existing right to request flexible work arrangements should be extended and that there needs to be an umpire that workers can go to if their employers refuse."

"Today's inquiry also highlighted a number of areas where the bill could be improved and I will look at that."

"I will continue to have discussions with the Minister and the crossbench about support for the bill and look forward to continuing its progress through Parliament."
