Greens Deputy Leader and science spokesperson Adam Bandt MP has criticised a government bill to almost double uni fees for maths and science students introduced into Parliament today.
The Higher Education Support Amendment (Student Contribution Amounts and Other Measures) Bill saves the Budget $316 million by increasing fees for maths and science courses at university.
"Almost doubling university HECS fees for maths and science students is economic stupidity. Science and innovation are central to our current and future economic prosperity," Adam Bandt said.
"The $316 million saving is a false economy if it means science and maths are not taken up by our young people."
"The $54 million for maths and science education, including programs we pushed to be reinstated, is welcome but doesn't make up for the $300 million ripped out of the pockets of maths and science students."
"On a day the Chief Scientist addressed the National Press Club on the importance of science and research the government is taking a step backwards in support for maths and science."
