Greens back Qantas support but with strings

Greens Leader Christine Milne and Greens Deputy Leader Adam Bandt have called on the government to support a loan guarantee or government investment in Qantas, but only if there are guarantees on protecting local jobs and conditions.

"There are strong economic and security reasons for Australia keeping a national carrier," Senator Milne said.

"Tony Abbott should not let more Australian jobs go to the wall. He needs to act.

"Australia is facing a jobs crisis, particularly in the south-east of the country. Qantas is a big employer and needs to stay in Australia."

Mr Bandt said: "The government needs to support Qantas, but only if there are protections for local jobs.

"Loan guarantees or a government stake in the airline could ensure a more sustainable future and protect Australian jobs, but only if there are clear guarantees.

"The government also needs to take this opportunity to get to the bottom of Qantas' management strategy, which may be to shift jobs offshore. Qantas must open its books if it wants public support."

The Greens policy of opposing any lifting of foreign ownership restrictions in the Qantas Sale Act remains unchanged.
