Greens MP for Melbourne Adam Bandt today called on the Treasurer to rule out potential cuts to health and medical research amidst intense speculation that $400 million will be slashed in the forthcoming budget.

Mr Bandt addressed the ‘Discoveries Need Dollars' rally in Melbourne today, called by health and medical researchers to protest against funding cuts.

"Melbourne's reputation as a centre of world-class health and medical research is under threat."

"How could the government justify giving $2.4 billion in tax cuts to big business with one hand and then taking funds from health and medical research with the other?"

"The proposed tax cuts for big business are not justified, especially when the government is claiming a shortfall in revenue."

"Health and medical research improves the lives of everyday people and provides enormous benefits to our economy and society. We should be building up our competitive advantage, not threatening to tear it down."

"The Greens stand with patients, researchers and the community in demanding medical research funding is protected in this budget."

"We have written to the Treasurer, raised this matter with the Prime Minister and are seeking an urgent briefing from Treasury on the Government's intentions."

"Health and medical research should not be on the chopping block to meet the Governments' self-imposed fiscal targets."
