Research funding blackmail will backfire: Bandt

Responding to reports that the Abbott government may threaten to slash to research funding in a bid to advance its university cuts agenda, Australian Greens research spokesperson and Deputy Leader, Adam Bandt, said the Greens won’t give in to blackmail.

“If Tony Abbott threatens cuts to research funding, he will be met with the mother of all protests,” said Mr Bandt.

Greens: Labor should block Coalition’s $2.3 billion cuts to higher education

The Greens are calling on Labor to vote with them to block the Coalition’s Bills to amend to Higher Education Support Act and Social Services Act that implement the $2.3 billion cuts to the higher education budget.

Greens spokesperson for higher education Senator Lee Rhiannon said: “The Greens campaigned strongly against these cuts during the federal election, and we will continue to stand alongside staff, students and the community by opposing them in the House and in the Senate.

Still no vacancy - Greens report on childcare in the Federal Electorate of Melbourne

Greens Deputy Leader and Federal Member for Melbourne has released a report into childcare availability in the Federal Electorate of Melbourne.

The survey of child care centres examines progress since 2010 and found 76% of centres had no vacancies for the 0–2 age group, and 43% had no vacancies for 3–4 year olds. The survey also found average waiting lists of more than 12 months for children under 2 years old and that some centres have over 300 families waiting for a place.

MPs flee parliament vote on uni cuts

Greens Deputy Leader Adam Bandt has condemned Labor and the Coalition after they voted today against his motion to reverse planned cuts to university funding and student support.

Mr Bandt said the fact more than 100 MPs fled the chamber to avoid having their names recorded showed they were ashamed of their parties’ policy on cuts.

The Greens will continue to fight to reverse the cuts before and after the election, Mr Bandt said.

Australian Greens launch national campaign to reverse Labor’s uni cuts

The Australian Greens today launched a new national campaign - Uni Cuts Hurt - to reverse Labor's $2.3 billion university funding cuts.

The Greens campaign is working for a 10 per cent increase in per student base funding, an additional $50 per week for students on Youth Allowance, greater job security and the rights of unions to enter workplaces.

As part of the campaign Greens Senators will work with university students and staff across the country to reverse the funding cuts to universities and retain student start-up scholarships.

Government must show guts on Gonski: Bandt

Responding to reports that the final week of Parliament will see legislation for the Gonski schools funding reform and a disability insurance scheme, Greens Deputy Leader and lower house MP, Adam Bandt, has demanded the Government commit serious funds when the bills are introduced.

"Labor must show some financial guts and tell the public how much money will be spent on schools and disability insurance" said Mr Bandt.

"I am sick of hearing big announcements about important reforms, only for the funding to be put on the never never."

CSIRO must remain independent: Bandt

Greens MP and science spokesperson Adam Bandt says the CSIRO should
not be a member of the logging industry's peak body, Australian Forest
Products Association (AFPA).

Mr Bandt says the CSIRO needs to remain independent and Minister Evans
needs to make that clear to the CSIRO.

The ABC's AM program revealed this morning that the CSIRO had paid
$10,000 to become a member of AFPA and that the AFPA had intervened
strongly in political debate, including lobbying against climate
change legislation.
