I would like to reflect on the decision by the High Court last Friday that the government has been acting unlawfully in relying on negative ASIO assessments to withhold protection visas from people found to be refugees. Refugees in this situation remain in detention but they are not told why they are being indefinitely detained, nor are they entitled to a review of this decision at law.

Greens move bill to protect local jobs from Rinehart-style EMA deals

Greens Deputy Leader and workplace relations spokesperson Adam Bandt says the government's deal with Gina Rinehart has revealed the threat to local jobs from Enterprise Migration Agreements (EMA).

Mr Bandt says the Greens will give notice of legislation today to regulate EMAs and ensure that the government and employers are required to put local jobs first.

Govt reneging on skills promise

Greens MP and employment and industry spokesperson, Adam Bandt, says the government is ignoring commitments made at Budget time last year to train Australian workers.

The Greens warned at the time that the government's skills package could lead to the mining industry ignoring Australian workers and our worst fears seem to be coming true, Mr Bandt said.

Mr Bandt called for the urgent fast-tracking of a National Skills Register that would help find work for skilled people in the non-mining states on mining and resource projects.
