De Kretser is right on floods: Bandt

Greens MP Adam Bandt has backed yesterday's comments from the Victorian Governor on the relationship between climate change and flooding and has said Premier Baillieu is being irresponsible in denying the link.

"The immediate task is to ensure the safety and welfare of Victorians affected by the floods. But this should not prevent us from having a discussion about the impact of climate change and the likelihood of these extreme events recurring," Greens MP Adam Bandt said.

Climate change debate

This motion seems simple, but accepting it means accepting all the consequences that flow from it. By publicly calling the science of climate change ‘crap' and then cleverly maintaining wiggle room, as the members for Flinders and Mitchell have just done-that, perhaps, any changes in temperature are not in fact human induced - the opposition condemns itself globally as a fringe group unwilling to accept the logical consequences of the argument that they have made for many years.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to speak today. I am very pleased to be addressing you as the first Greens MP elected to a lower house seat at a general election.

There is no greater leadership required at the moment than that necessary to meet the carbon challenge.

The challenge of how to shift to a zero-carbon economy in Australia contains many pitfalls and hurdles, but also enormous opportunities and possibilities.

But, given the perils we face, we have no choice but to pursue these opportunities.
