Equal marriage in Parliament again in August: Bandt

Greens MP Adam Bandt has secured time in Parliament in August for further discussion on the issue of equal marriage rights.

Last year, Parliament passed Mr Bandt's motion calling on MPs to consult their constituencies on marriage equality rights for all couples. MPs will now be able to report back to Parliament on August 17 with the results of their consultations.

"Over the last few months people have approached their MPs around the country, seeking that Australia move into the 21st century by allowing all citizens to marry their loved ones."

Marriage Vote A Big Step Forward: Greens

Greens MP Adam Bandt and Senator Sarah Hanson-Young have welcomed the Parliament's support for the Greens motion on marriage equality.

"To the boy in a country town discovering who he's attracted to, to the student wanting to take her girlfriend to a school formal or the couple who want to spend their lives together, today the Australian parliament has taken an important step towards acknowledging what you already know: love is equal," Adam Bandt said today.

Big shift on marriage equality welcome: Bandt

Greens MP Adam Bandt has welcomed the growing support for marriage equality expressed by backbenchers today.

A Sky News poll of 39 Labor members conducted today found 22 in support of marriage equality.

"With this motion we set out to create a new level of discussion on marriage equality and we have certainly achieved that goal," Mr Bandt said.

"While our focus has been on the discussion rather than the numbers in Parliament, we are looking forward to a possible vote tomorrow or Thursday."

Love knows no boundaries.

Love knows no limits.

And love knows when it has found its partner.

Mr Speaker, there have been many attempts through history to limit love.

And all have failed.

And as we move further into the 21st century I am confident that attempts to limit love will fail again, that full marriage equality will become a reality.

Mr Speaker, this motion before the Parliament does not seek to overturn the Howard government's change to the Marriage Act which sought to limit marriage to a few.

According to a Galaxy Poll released last month, a growing majority of Australians - 62% - believe that same-sex couples should have the right to marry.

While community support grows the Greens are continuing to build support in the Parliament for our Marriage Equality Amendment Bill which will enshrine the right for all couples to marry.

MR BANDT: To move-That this House:
(1)   Notes that:

(a)    there is a the growing list of countries that allow same-sex couples to marry including the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Spain, Canada and South Africa; and

(b)   there is widespread support for equal marriage in the Australian community.


(2) calls on all parliamentarians to gauge their constituents' views on the issue of marriage equality.
