Maurice Newman's latest comments on climate change are almost deranged and an embarrassment to the government, leaving Tony Abbott no choice but to dump him as head of the Prime Minister's Business Advisory Council, Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt said today.

Responding to reports Tony Abbott is planning to make petrol more expensive, Greens Deputy Leader, Adam Bandt, said Tony Abbott should end fuel subsidies for wealthy miners first.

"Taxpayers shouldn't fork out billions each year just so the likes of Gina Rinehart can buy cheap diesel," said Mr Bandt.

"How can Tony Abbott justify making people pay more for petrol while giving wealthy miners subsidised fuel?"

Axe $13 billion in fossil-fuel subsidies: Greens

The Greens today said a report from the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) makes clear that Tony Abbott can raise more than $13 billion without hurting vulnerable Australians.

The PBO report details how, by ending taxpayer subsidies to ‘big mining’ and the likes of Gina Rinehart, the Abbott Government wouldn’t need to go after pensioners, disabled people and Medicare, said acting Greens Leader, Adam Bandt.

The Australian Greens will move amendments in the Lower House today to stop the Abbott Government from ripping up threatened species protection.
