Greens MP Adam Bandt says the Government's excuse for excluding gold from the mining tax does not wash.

Mr Bandt asked the Treasurer about putting gold in the mining tax in Question Time today.

"Gold is traded on international and local markets. To suggest it can't be taxed because it is mined with other minerals is simply not right", Mr Bandt said.

"Mr Swan's explanation does not wash. His own department recommended gold be in the original mining tax."

Greens MP Adam Bandt was on Lateline discussing the need for urgent action on climate change and negotiations to put a price on pollution.

Greens MP Adam Bandt has told the Parliament that the nuclear debate in Australia is now over.

In a speech last night discussing the emergency at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Mr Bandt said other MPs, who just three weeks ago were strongly advocating nuclear power, were now silent.

Australia's uranium exports to Japan and other countries also now needed to be reconsidered, he said.

"The debate on nuclear power in this country is now over", Mr Bandt told the Parliament.
