Greens to test gov mettle on high speed rail

Adam Bandt 19 Aug 2014

Greens Deputy Leader, Adam Bandt, says the government needs to do more than talk to possible foreign investors to show its commitment to high speed rail.

The Greens will move a motion to test the government's support for action on high speed rail when Parliament resumes next week.

"All we have had from Labor and now the Coalition is talk on high speed rail, but what we need is action," said Mr Bandt.

"The first step in getting high speed rail on track is a clear commitment to move ahead, something both the old parties have refused to do."

Tony Abbott refuses to provide East-West business case to Parliament

Adam Bandt 9 Jul 2014

The Member for Melbourne, Adam Bandt MP, today condemned Tony Abbott for treating the Commonwealth Parliament and Victorian taxpayers with contempt over the East-West toll road in Melbourne.

“The Senate required the Abbott Government provide it with the full business case for the East-West toll road by July 7. Tony Abbott’s refusal shows contempt for the public, who have a right to know the dodgy numbers behind the toll road,” said Mr Bandt.

“Tony Abbott is treating Victorians with utter contempt by refusing to release the East-West toll road business case.

Only Greens Can Save Melbourne From East-West Disaster: Bandt

Adam Bandt 1 Jul 2014

Greens Deputy Leader and Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt MP condemned the decision of State Planning Minister, Matthew Guy MP, to spend billions on the flawed East-West tollway.

"Public transport will be the first casualty of Minister Guy's go-ahead for East-West, as the tollway will be a disastrous drain on the public purse,” said Mr Bandt.

“Given Labor will build the tollway as long as the Liberals sign the contracts first, the only thing that can stop it is voting Greens at the Victorian election in November."

Adam Bandt 4 Jun 2014

Member for Melbourne and Deputy Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, today called on Labor leader Bill Shorten to pull Victorian Labor into line over its support for the Napthine Government’s East-West toll road.

“The Greens are calling on Victorian Labor leader Daniel Andrews to make his support of the Napthine Budget conditional on no East-West contracts being signed before the election,” said Mr Bandt.

“The East-West toll road is a multibillion-dollar white elephant, sucking billions from the Federal and Victorian budgets.

Major boost for east coast high-speed rail

Adam Bandt 9 Apr 2014

Greens Deputy Leader and HSR spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said a new report has given added impetus to East Coast high-speed rail (HSR).

“The Greens would build high-speed rail along Australia’s east coast. The case is already too compelling not to. Today’s high-level report makes it more so,” said Mr Bandt.

“The report by Beyond Zero Emissions, the German Aerospace Centre and the University of Melbourne makes clear the myriad advantages HSR would bring to the majority of Australians who live along the east coast.

Fate of East-West toll road rests with Labor

Adam Bandt 9 Apr 2014

Greens Deputy Leader Adam Bandt MP today said that the fate of the proposed $8 billion East-West toll road rests with Labor.

“Dennis Napthine is proceeding to flush at least $8 billion dollars of taxpayers’ money down the drain, with Linking Melbourne Authority reportedly consulting with councils on where the groundwork will begin,” said Mr Bandt.

“If Labor commits to tearing up the contracts for the proposed toll road if it wins the State election later this year, I don’t believe that the project would proceed.

Planning committee urged to reject East-West toll road

Adam Bandt 7 Apr 2014

Greens Deputy Leader and Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt MP today urged the project assessment committee to reject the proposed East-West toll road.

"Although today was the first time I have had the opportunity to address the committee, what I said hasn’t changed. This proposal is a white elephant in the making that will waste billions of taxpayers’ dollars, fill our suburbs up with more cars, create more pollution and destroy what’s best about inner Melbourne,” said Mr Bandt.
