Greens Treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today called on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to have the courage to stand up to the Liberal Party base and make our tax system fairer by starting tax reform at the top, not at the bottom.

“Malcolm Turnbull needs to have the courage to stand up to the Liberal Party base and make our tax system fairer,” Mr Bandt said.

“Tax reform should start at the top, not at the bottom.”

Greens Treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said that instead of considering a raise to the GST, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his cabinet must start at the top with tax reform.

“Malcolm Turnbull declared that ‘fairness is absolutely critical’ when it comes to tax reform, yet he continues to turn a blind eye to unfair tax breaks,” Mr Bandt said.

“Any rise to the GST will hit the poorest hardest.”

Greens Treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP says Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook is the canary in the coal mine, reinforcing the need to grow the new economy and get rid of unfair tax breaks if Australia is to avoid descent into austerity and economic irrelevance.

Mr Bandt says the cuts to programs outlined in today's announcement are too harsh and are unnecessary, as the government should instead tackle unfair tax breaks for the wealthy. The Greens have outlined $38 billion in unfair tax breaks, costed by the Parliamentary Budget Office.

Greens Treasury spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said he wants to make sure that the government’s exposure draft of further changes to superannuation isn't about helping banks come after Australians’ super.

“I am concerned that the government is trying to limit sector and community input to the exposure draft by releasing it just before Christmas and setting a deadline of January 20,” Mr Bandt said.

"I also fear that there is a concerted push underway by the banks to get their hands on compulsory superannuation savings.”

PBO analysis shows lifetime caps alone not enough to reform super: Greens
