The Australian Greens have today released Parliamentary Budget Office costings that show removing structural unfairness in the tax system through the discount on Capital Gains Tax (CGT) could generate as much as $74 billion over the next ten years, rising to $127 billion when negative gearing reforms that have warped the housing market are taken into account.

Treasurer’s early Christmas gift to big corporates

Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt MP says the Treasurer has handed the big end of town an early Christmas gift while continuing his vicious attack on the young, the old, the sick and the poor.

“Mr Hockey is no scrooge, he’s left a gift for his corporate mates under the giving tree just in time for Christmas,” Mr Bandt said.

“The Abbott government method is to take from the poor and give to the rich.”

MYEFO shocker, not a shock absorber

Adam Bandt 15 Dec 2014

Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt says the Abbott government’s cruel budget priorities have continued in the MYEFO mini budget update.

“This isn’t a budget update at all, it’s just more of the same. This isn’t Joe Hockey’s shock absorber, it’s just a shocker,” Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt said.

“Instead of listening to the public and the Parliament, the government is still trying to balance the budget by taking the axe to the young, the old, the sick and the poor.

Budget makeover won't wash: Bandt

Adam Bandt 17 Aug 2014

Reports that the government is considering a Budget makeover won't make it fair, Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt said today.

"You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig," Mr Bandt said.

"If you still have to pay more to go to the doctor or to university, the Budget is still unfair."

"Tweaking the Budget will still see the young, the sick and the poor bearing the brunt of the cuts."

Abbott should reshuffle Cabinet and change Budget direction: Bandt

Tony Abbott should respond to his Treasurer's and Ministers' recent comments by rearranging his front bench and using the opportunity to ditch unfair Budget measures, said Acting Greens Leader, Adam Bandt.

"Tony Abbott's senior Ministers have broken the golden rule of Liberal party politics. They've stopped spouting three word slogans and told us what they really think, exposing that they don't share modern Australian values," said Mr Bandt.

Hockey needs to be subbed off: Bandt

Tony Abbott needs to sub Joe Hockey off the field if he wants to make any headway with his Budget, Acting Greens Leader Adam Bandt said today.

"On same day that the Commonwealth Bank announces record profits, we see that wages growth is the lowest in 17 years and real wages are going backwards. Meanwhile Joe Hockey says the poor don't drive but the big banks should be let off the hook."

Bank tax could fix Hockey’s Budget mess: Bandt

Joe Hockey should face reality and address the Budget's revenue squeeze by a levy on the big banks, instead of harmful cuts and slugging everyday Australians Greens Acting Leader Adam Bandt said today.

The Commonwealth Bank announced a record profit of $8.7 billion today.

"A modest levy on the big banks would raise twice the revenue of Joe Hockey's plan to slug patients with co-payments and extra charges," Mr Bandt said.

"Instead of trying to strongarm crossbench senators, Joe Hockey should make the big banks and big miners pay their fair share."

Petrol tax reveals Abbott’s new three word slogan: Stuff you, mate

Adam Bandt 9 May 2014

Responding to reports Tony Abbott is planning to make petrol more expensive, Acting Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, said Tony Abbott's refusal to end fuel subsidies for wealthy miners proved the Coalition was siding with big business against everyday Australians.

"Tony Abbott's plan is for people to keep forking out billions each year just so the likes of Gina Rinehart can buy cheap diesel," said Mr Bandt.

"By making people pay more for petrol and GP visits while giving wealthy miners subsidised fuel, Tony Abbott has revealed his new three word slogan: ‘Stuff you, mate'.

Audit report a kick in the guts for families: Greens

The Australian Greens have today slammed the report from Tony Abbott's Commission of Audit which protects the big end of town while slugging families and low income earners.

"This is a hit on every family in the country, while Gina Rinehart gets off scot-free," said Australian Greens Leader, Christine Milne.

"Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey handpicked commissioners from the big end of town and rigged the terms of reference to ensure that the audit would focus on sweeping cuts to government services. And the commission has delivered precisely the report the government wanted.
